There are several reputable third part authentication companies you can use when purchasing items in the pre-owned market and I’ve created a list below. I’ve broken down each company and added in the pertinent information for each so you can make an informed decision.
In a time where it is so easy to throw up a website and call yourself an “authenticator”, the companies listed below have proven their knowledge and all are working towards creating trust in the resale industry.
If you want to become an authenticator yourself, the Authentication Institute of America is the first educational platform where you can receive training and certification to learn more about the brands or to start your journey to become an authentication specialist.
One big misconceptions that anyone can bring their items to the brands boutique and have them authenticated by the staff. No. Brands instruct their employees to not comment on authenticity. Period.
Below is a list of the images need for third part authentication companies (Open Luxury has great images needed for authentication) and make sure you are taking these pictures in good lighting, close up, clear and straight on of that area and do not send blurry images.
- Interior lining, interior logo, interior date code or any other tabs
- Any other discerning areas which are unique to that item
Each company also offers expedited authentications for a fee (except Entrupy) so keep that in mind cost wise when looking at companies. I’ve also included links for each company to their reviews on TrustPilot if available as some companies like Authentic Detective, The Fashion Detective and Open Luxury are newer so they don’t have any reviews as of yet but, I know the people behind each of these companies and I trust them.
Do you know of an authentication company that should be listed here? Send me their name here.
